Best Campervan and RV Rentals in Melbourne

So yes, Melbourne is probably worth a visit!

Sitting on the south coast of Australia in Victoria, Melbourne is a popular place to kick off an Australia road trip, especially for those looking to head up the east coast, or across South Australia.

But any epic road trip is nothing without an epic vehicle! And for those of you that don't fancy a smaller car rental in Melbourne (I don't blame you) it can be hard to decide who to choose.

There’s so much choice out there nowadays for campervan rentals, but fear not as we're here to help!

How to book your chosen rental

With so much choice, you can waste precious hours trying to find the perfect rental vehicle.

Planning a road trip is time consuming enough, so to save you a bit of time, we’d recommend the next couple of sites to get your search off on the right foot!

GoSee - Best for comparing rental firms

GoSee Travel is a fantastic way to secure the best campervan, motorhome or RV rental from some of the most popular and trusted firms in and around Melbourne.

It’s super easy and efficient to use. Simply just enter your availability and your location and see what’s available to you.

It’s easy to filter by price, so you only find what’s within your budget. And GoSee makes it really easy to compare prices and amenities on the biggest range of Melbourne RV rentals.

So yeah, GoSee is pretty great. And there’s plenty of other reasons to check them out:

  • You don’t need to worry about finding a better deal elsewhere with their low price guarantee.
  • If you have any issues at any stage of your research and/or booking process there’s always someone on hand to help with their 24/7 support team.
  • Your rental firm let you down at the last minute? No problem! All bookings come with a  vehicle guarantee, so they’ll ensure you have a similar vehicle for your trip at no extra charge.

To make your RV rental search that little bit easier, we’ve included GoSee links for all our recommended firms where possible.

Outdoorsy - Best for privately-owned rentals

If you don’t fancy commercial RV rental, then renting from a private owner might be the choice for you!

Outdoorsy is one of the largest RV rental marketplaces, and they've so far rented vehicles out for over 2 million travel days, and 160 million miles!

Not only is it great for custom vehicle rental, but it also pairs travellers up with like minded vehicle owners, offering a truly unique experience, and often first hand knowledge, experience and recommendations.

It’s a bit like Airbnb but for campervans. There’s the opportunity to chat with the host (the owner) before booking, then you hire directly from them - no third party involved.

Melbourne Outdoorsy rentals

Booking through Outdoorsy is certainly a different experience than booking through a rental firm. However, there’s lots of advantages:

  • Endless choice - there’s all manner of vehicles and trailers on this marketplace, done up in all sorts of quirky and unique ways. From converted work vans, to refurbished buses and micro vehicles, you name it, Outdoorsy has it!
  • Filter to exactly what you need - if it’s budget that’s your top priority, filter by price. If it’s luxury amenities that mean the most to you, filter by on board facilities. It’s never been easier to find exactly what you’re looking for.
  • Breakdown cover and insurance - you'll have $1 million worth of insurance cover available, and you can sort out your vehicle insurance when you book. There’s also 24/7 roadside assistance included in all bookings so you can have a worry free trip.

If you’re heading from Victoria up the East Coast, then one way rentals from Spaceships could be the way to go. They have 5 other branches across Australia so you could drop off your RV rental in Sydney, Brisbane, Airlie Beach, Cairns, or Hobart.

One of the best things about Spaceships is you can pick up the vehicle whenever is best for you! Their contactless and automated pick up means the ball is fully in your court. Collect your RV 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Outdoorsy RV and Camper Rentals in Melbourne

Overview:

We’ve already mentioned Outdoorsy, but it’s so great it deserves a second mention!

17 million RVs go unused for 346 days of the year, so Outdoorsy gets those vehicles out of the garage and onto the road!

Although it isn’t your generic way of renting an RV, hiring a vehicle through Outdoorsy is super easy and straightforward.

Start with a simple search by your location, dates and any amenities that are non-negotiable. If there’s a few that catch your eye you can save them for later, so there’s a clear comparison to help make your decision easier.

If there’s anything you’re unsure of, just drop the host a message prior to booking to ask some more in depth questions. As soon as you’re ready, send the host a booking request. Once it’s accepted you can get cracking with all the logistics for pick up and drop off.

Whilst you’ll have to go and collect some vehicles, some hosts will offer a drop off service where the camper can be dropped off at an address of your choice. Or better still, you can have it dropped off and set up for you at a campsite or RV park, so all you have to do is turn up.

Whatever you choose to do the host will always meet you for a key exchange, to go through all the RV nitty gritty. Then all that’s left for you to do is hit the road!

Once your trip is over and done with, you’ll sadly have to part ways with your vehicle, and return it to the host in the same, pristine condition you received it.

Vehicles on offer:

When we say there’s something for everyone, we really mean there’s something for everyone!

Even vehicles you didn’t know existed are on Outdoorsy!

To find an example of a Melbourne RV rental, I’ve done a quick search for a vehicle suitable for 2 adults, with a kitchen, sink, and a dining table.

For $89 a night, you can rent this Festival Camper, a 2009 Mercedes sprinter converted ambulance, which comes equipped with a roll-out kitchen, heaps of storage, and a great sound system.

It's also solar powered and has a stylish custom built interior.

You get 250 free miles per day with the rental, and you have the option to add on some extras when you book, like bedding and a toll package. There’s a refundable security deposit to pay, as well as a prep and cleaning fee.

Rentals over 7 nights are entitled to 5% reduction on the nightly rate, whilst rentals over 30 nights are eligible for a 9.9% reduction per night. The vehicle is available for pick up from Great Waverley, Victoria.

How much does it cost to rent a motorhome in Melbourne?

Prices for RV rental in Melbourne vary significantly. You could pay as little as $60 a day for a vehicle, all the way up to $350.

The prices will fluctuate throughout the year; you can expect to pay more for RV rental during peak times.

If you book a long way in advance, you’re likely to benefit from a reduced rate. But you also could get a last minute deal if you’re feeling spontaneous.

The size and class of vehicle, as well as the on board amenities and facilities will make a difference. You’ll also see a difference between renting a commercial RV and renting a private RV.

Bear in mind that the RV rental fee isn’t the only cost you’ll incur throughout your road trip. There’s lots of other costs involved in renting an RV, for example additional drivers, road tax, insurance, fuel, optional extras, and road tolls.

How old do you need to be to hire an RV in Melbourne?

Lots of US and UK firms will only rent vehicles to those over 25, or maybe 21 if you’re lucky!

But in Australia the oldest you’ll have to be is 21, and lots of the firms we've recommended above will rent to drivers as young as 18.

There may be additional costs involved if you’re a younger driver so always check before you book.

Can you park an RV anywhere in Melbourne?

In Australia, National Parks are part of the designated places where you can park a campervan or RV, and you can pay fees to stay overnight in any Australian national park.

There are 45 National Parks in Victoria state.

Another great place to park your RV overnight is a campground or RV park. There’s lots of options in Victoria.

Rest areas aren’t suitable for camping but they’re a great option for overnight parking. Some of them will have essential facilities such as showers and toilets.

To find free places to park and sleep in your vehicle overnight, have a look on park4night.
