First up, we LOVE Iceland, and we have personally spent over a month driving the entire country...and I mean entire ;)
We've driven the full Icelandic Ring Road, the Diamond Circle, Golden Circe, South Coast and the mighty Westfjords!
And it's got a LOT of amazing things to do!
But as we found paying for accommodation each night, renting a campervan in Iceland is by far the best and CHEAPEST way to explore.
You get to save a bunch of money on expensive accommodation, whilst also spending your nights camped out under the beautiful Icelandic skies.
Better still, exploring this country in a motorhome gives you flexibility and the chance to go off the beaten track.
There's just one problem ...
There are lots of rental companies in Iceland.
To make things easier, I’ve handpicked the top ones for you!
As well as giving my best tips on where to book in order to get the best price possible.
Let's take a look…
We’re not just travel bloggers—we live and breathe van life.

Our hands-on experience is tough to beat
If you’d like to know more about our story and philosophy, check out our full bio here. We’re here to make your campervan trip in Iceland safe, seamless, and unforgettable.
If you want the short, practical answer, focus on the van setup first, not the company.
For Iceland, most travellers will have the best experience in a campervan or motorhome that has:
Those features matter far more here than saving a bit of money on a basic sleeper van. Which may well end up costing you more anyway, when you factor in the need to find and pay for those facilities at campsites.

When you search with those features selected (I recommend doing so on Motorhome Republic here), you’ll often see fully equipped motorhomes from companies like Rent Easy and McRent appearing in the results.
As shown in the screenshot above (prices shown are from the time of searching and will change), both companies regularly list:
McRent in particular consistently operates one of the largest motorhome fleets in Iceland, which makes them a strong balance of availability, vehicle quality, and reasonable rates.
Especially for couples and families.

Rather than trying to memorise company names, the fastest way to see what actually fits this criteria is to run a search with your dates on Motorhome Republic. Then let the filters do the work.
Once you’re on the results page:
From there, you can:
And ultimately … choose the best option for your trip.
Below, we’ve ranked the best campervan and motorhome rental companies in Iceland, and explained what each is best suited for. But using the filters above is the fastest way to see what’s actually available for your dates.

For most road trips in Iceland, a standard campervan will be perfectly suitable. The main roads, including the famous Ring Road, are paved and well maintained.
However, if you’re planning to drive on F-roads in Iceland’s Highlands, you’ll need a 4x4 campervan. These mountain roads are rough, often involve river crossings, and are only open during the summer months.
Many travellers visiting between November and March also choose a 4x4 campervan for extra safety when driving in snow and icy conditions.
If you’re sticking to the Ring Road and popular attractions though, a standard campervan is usually more than enough.
Now, let's get down to it!
There’s an overwhelming number of campervan rental companies in Iceland as it’s such a popular country for road-tripping.
We’ve come up with our own ranking system to show you the best options, which will hopefully make the whole booking process much easier.
We compared more than 4 dozen different campervan rental companies in Iceland, by looking at their Google reviews (+ rating), Trustpilot scores, and Motorhome Republic Ratings. After looking at the data and taking into account our own personal experiences, we’ve ranked the country’s top campervan rental companies.
Booking an Iceland campervan is mainly an availability game. The good vans that have a toilet, shower and decent heating get snapped up first, especially in summer.
When we toured Iceland in April/May, we found that the popular attractions along the south coast were PACKED with campervans from that first week in May. It’s literally a showcase side-by-side of all the campervan rental firms in Iceland.
Based on when you are traveling …
It’s like most things, if you want the best balance of price and choice, then you want to book ASAP. Even as much as a year in advance. Prices can jump quickly when inventory drops.
When it comes to camper rentals in Iceland, you’ll often find the best deals by using Motorhome Republic.
Motorhome Republic is a price comparison site that will help you find cheap rentals.

The website is effortless to use, making it easy to find vehicle availability for your chosen dates, and the best rental packages on offer.
Most campervan rental companies in Iceland operate from Keflavík International Airport, which is where almost all international travellers arrive. This means you can pick up your campervan immediately after landing and start your road trip straight away. You can search for ths specifically though if needed.
There are also other benefits of search with Motorhome Republic including:
Where possible, I’ve included links to Motorhome Republic to make your booking process much smoother!

McRent is the largest motorhome rental company in Europe and has over 100 stations worldwide.
This company has an impressive rental fleet and all vehicles are 2 years old or less. They also have a great customer service team on hand to help with any questions/issues you may have.
However, it’s the company’s fantastic rental package that really stands out. With your rental, you’ll have unlimited mileage, extensive insurance, an awning, and a bicycle rack included.
McRent also ensures that its vehicles are professionally cleaned after each rental.

McRent offers a wide variety of campervans and motorhome models.
The UrbanPlus is a popular option. It’s a large campervan that seats and sleeps 4 people and offers a great design.
Those after a more spacious motorhome will be spoilt for choice. The Family Standard is one of the company’s most affordable motorhomes and sleeps 4.
There’s also the EcoLine 6 for those who are travelling as a large group or family as it sleeps 6.
Just be aware that McRent only offers large campervans and motorhomes, so if you’re after a small vehicle, you may want to check out some of the other companies in this guide.

Part of Touring Car’s fleet is dedicated to luxury motorhomes that have all driven less than 100,000km.
So, if you choose this company you know you’re getting a reliable, great-quality vehicle.
They also provide free pick up and drop-off between KEF airport, and free transfers to and from nearby hotels.
Each rental comes with all the essentials including unlimited km, insurance, and 24/7 roadside assistance.
However, it’s important to note that you’ll only be able to hire campervans with this company if you’re aged 23 or over!

Touring Cars has six motorhomes available to hire ranging from 2 to 6 berths, and each one comes with a navigation system, kitchenware, and a cleaning kit.
The only thing to keep in mind about Touring Cars’ motorhomes is that they’re all large. If you’d prefer to drive something smaller, you may want to look somewhere else.
These motorhomes are also designed with space and luxury in mind, so they aren’t very budget-friendly.
However, if you’re travelling as a family or a large group they’re perfect.

Rent Easy is another excellent campervan rental company in Iceland and forms part of the same wider rental group as McRent. The company specialises in premium campervans and motorhomes that are well-equipped for longer road trips around Iceland.
One of the biggest advantages of renting with Rent Easy is the modern fleet. Their vehicles are typically under two years old and come packed with features designed to make campervan travel more comfortable.
Rent Easy also offers a strong rental package, with things like unlimited mileage, kitchen equipment, and bedding often included. Their vehicles are professionally maintained and cleaned between rentals to ensure everything is ready for your trip.
Because the company focuses on quality vehicles and reliable service, it’s a great option for travellers who want a slightly more premium campervan experience when exploring Iceland.

Rent Easy offers a variety of well-equipped campervans and motorhomes suitable for different group sizes.
The Active Extra is a popular option for couples or small groups. This campervan offers comfortable sleeping space for up to 3 people while still being relatively compact and easy to drive around Iceland.
For families or larger groups, the Family Classic motorhome is a great choice. It offers plenty of interior space, a kitchen area, and sleeping space for up to 4 people.
Those travelling with a larger group may prefer the Family Luxury motorhome, which offers sleeping space for up to 5 people and includes a spacious interior layout designed for longer road trips.
Just keep in mind that Rent Easy focuses mainly on larger campervans and motorhomes rather than very small vans, so travellers looking for the most compact options may want to explore some of the other companies in this guide.

Camp Easy is a family-run rental company that has nearly 10 years of experience in campervan hire.
Their office is situated right by KEF airport, and free transfers are available for anyone who books with this company!
They have support on hand 24/7, as well as on-the-go email and phone support.
Not only that, but Camp Easy has a live fleet management system, which means they’ll never cancel a booking!
With such great reviews and a wide variety of vehicles to choose from, this is a great option when it comes to camper rentals in Iceland.
Not to mention, they are also found on our favourite campervan booking platform (Motorhome Republic) where you’ll find some fantastic rental deals.
Camp Easy has 12 different vehicles available to hire, ranging from small campers to large vans.
Each rental comes with everything you need including a quality stove, kitchenware, running water, and even a laundry rack.
You’ll be pleased to hear that all campers come with heating and a ventilation system too, so you can travel around Iceland whenever!
Camp Easy also has three 4x4 campervans that are specifically designed to tackle Iceland’s F-roads. They come with larger tyres and raised chassis, which means you can go wherever your heart desires!

Go Campers is one of the most trusted campervan rental companies in Iceland.
They pride themselves on their ‘no hidden charges’ policy, which means you won’t be hit with any unexpected fees or add-ons.
You also get unlimited mileage with each rental, a collision damage waiver, and an extra driver included for FREE! They also offer emergency 24/7 roadside assistance.
Not only do they have a lot to offer for travellers, but Go Campers is also an eco-friendly rental company. They offer guests the chance to offset their carbon footprint by tree planting in collaboration with the Iceland Carbon Fund.
Like Camp Easy, Go Campers can also be found on Motorhome Republic, which offers you the chance to easily compare a variety of vehicles and rental companies.
Go Campers have 10 vehicles available to hire ranging from compact to large campers. They also have a selection of 4x4 vehicles.
Although the amenities included differ with each vehicle, many of the campers have a heating system, a gas stove, and also come with free sleeping bags.
If you’re travelling on a budget, then Go Campers is a great choice as you can pick up a rental for as little as $90 per day.
This is a bargain (considering everything that’s included) so if you’re looking to save some cash - check this company out!

JS Camper Rental specialises in 4x4 rentals, which is a must if you’re heading down Iceland’s F-roads.
Their vehicles are unique, as they are pickup trucks with a small caravan-style roof box on top, which offers plenty of room for travellers.
Each rental includes a Collision Damage Waiver, VAT, and unlimited km, so you won’t have to worry about the distance you travel.
There are also plenty of optional extras available including more insurance options, and an extra driver but the cost will increase with these.

All the vehicles at JS Camper Rental have been upgraded to the newest Toyota Hilux pickup.
The 4 wheel drive will allow you to explore Iceland’s highlands if you wish, which gives you complete flexibility for your trip.
o explore Iceland’s highlands if you wish, which gives you complete flexibility for your trip.
Each rental comes with a gas stove and heater, a refrigerator, 40L of fresh water, and volt sockets.
Although the vehicles are smaller than many other campers on this list, there is so much space!
If you’re not feeling confident enough to drive a large van in Iceland, then a Toyota Hilux is a great option. This is the same base vehicle we used for touring the rugged landscape of Norway, and it was perfect!

If you’re looking to rent a smaller camper for getting around Iceland, then I recommend checking out Lava Car Rental.
They are a local and family-owned company with years of experience and thousands of happy customers/good reviews under their belt.
Having built up a large presence on the island as a top-rated car rental company, they’re now a big player in the campervan rental space as well, with large renovations to their fleet planned for the coming year.
As you will see, they specialise in smaller campers. There are lots of benefits to renting a smaller vehicle in Iceland, as opposed to a larger motorhome.
Not least in wintery conditions and if you have little experience driving large vehicles (especially abroad).

Their vans are built on the hugely popular Renault Kangoo, offering a compact and reliable vehicle for travel almost anywhere in Iceland.
All vehicles are fitted with a Webasto heating system, keeping you warm throughout those cold Icelandic nights, as well as other essential camping equipment; cooking gear, sleeping bags, tables and chairs.
It's worth noting that this comes as standard, which is something to factor into pricing. Many other rental companies will charge you more for such items.
So if you’re travelling as a couple or pair of friends, then these guys are definitely worth considering!
Other features worth pointing out when booking are:

Europcar is one of the largest vehicle rental companies in the world, operating thousands of rental stations across more than 140 countries.
In Iceland, Europcar rentals are operated by the local franchise partner Höldur, which has been providing vehicle rentals in the country for decades and operates a large nationwide fleet and service network.
Because of this partnership, Europcar offers travellers the reliability of a global brand combined with local expertise and support on the ground. The company provides flexible rental options, convenient airport pickup locations, and a wide range of vehicles depending on availability.
Another advantage is that Europcar vehicles are frequently available through third-party booking platforms, making it easy to compare prices and availability alongside other campervan rental providers. *cough cough, this is where Motorhome Republic comes in.
Europcar’s Iceland fleet typically focuses on larger vehicles, vans, and motorhomes rather than small camper conversions. Availability can vary depending on season and booking platform.
Motorhomes offered through Europcar’s Iceland franchise are generally designed for 2–4 travellers, with features such as sleeping areas, kitchen facilities, storage space, and dining areas suitable for road trips around the country.
These vehicles are designed for comfortable travel along Iceland’s Ring Road and major routes, providing enough interior space for cooking, sleeping, and relaxing during longer journeys.
Because Europcar primarily operates as a large international rental network, the exact campervan or motorhome models available may vary depending on the supplier and the time of year.

Cozy Campers is another top pick for campervan rental in Iceland.
This company has been around since 2014 and has gained a fantastic reputation since then.
Not only do they offer a variety of campervans but Cozy Campers is known for its excellent customer service, especially as there’s a 24/7 emergency phone number.
This company offers a fantastic rental package too, including unlimited mileage, free cancellation, CDW insurance, and a fuel discount card.
You can also purchase additional features including a tunnel pass, power inverter, child seat, and camping table and chairs.
Just be aware that there’s an extra charge for additional drivers and roadside assistance.
Cozy Campers has three ranges of vehicles; Premium Campers, Standard Campers, and Budget Campers.
Cozy 1 is one of the company’s most affordable campervans and is the smallest vehicle they have. It’s suitable for couples and features a refrigerator/cooler, sink, and gas stove.
Those after something more spacious should check out the Highlander I. This 4WD rental offers some great features, including a sky roof, floodlights, and large tyres, so it’s perfect for off-roading.
No matter whether you’re after a small vehicle or a spacious camper, there’s something for everyone.

If you’re looking for affordable campervan rentals in Iceland, then Happy Campers is a great option.
Not only will you save a ton of cash, but you’ll have access to the ‘Happy App’ too which is an itinerary builder - perfect to help you find those hidden gems.
Once you’ve booked your van you’ll also get access to the ‘Happy Iceland e-book’, and can enjoy a wide variety of partner discounts as you travel around the country.
Happy Campers is also an eco-friendly company that plants at least 1 tree for every booking!
This rental company includes a Collision Damage Waiver within their rental price, and they also have different bundles to choose from when booking your camper.

Happy Campers has nine different vehicles available to rent.
The cheapest option is the Happy 1 EX which seats and sleeps two. It’s manual transmission and is known for its award-winning design.
Each rental comes with a gas stove, sink with running water, a heating system, and a refrigerator among other amenities.
Campervan rental prices in Iceland vary mainly by season and vehicle type. Instead of focusing on exact daily prices, it’s more useful to understand where each option sits from lower-cost to premium.
For a very rough idea of what each pricing means:
Note: Some vans are slightly cheaper and some are pricier, these prices are just a very rough guide.
This is peak season and the most expensive time to rent.
Availability drops quickly in summer, so prices tend to rise as dates fill up.
Often the best balance of cost and choice.
Weather can be mixed, so heating and indoor space are still important.
Generally the cheapest time overall, but vehicle choice matters more.
Prices are lower, but the best winter-suitable vans are limited and often book early.
If you’re looking for cheap campervan rental in Iceland, travelling outside the summer peak season can significantly reduce costs. Prices are usually much lower during spring and autumn, and many rental companies offer discounts for longer bookings.
Insurance matters more in Iceland than in most places we have rented campervans.
The roads, weather and terrain make certain types of damage far more common, and basic cover often does not include them.
The very things that make Iceland such a stunning place to visit, are what are also some of your biggest nemesis. These include …
Note: These types of cover are usually offered later in the booking process or by the rental company directly, rather than being clearly listed at the search stage. Or they may even be tucked away in the suppliers terms & conditions. Just be sure to check carefully before booking.
Gravel roads are common outside towns and on many scenic routes.
This is specific to Iceland and catches a lot of people out.
Icelandic wind is no joke.
For Iceland, the safest approach is to choose the highest insurance package offered or add gravel plus sand and ash protection at a minimum.
It costs more upfront, but it can save a very large bill if something goes wrong.
Maybe we are just more cautious than others. When we rent a car in any country we always factor in insurance and excess cover into the price. It just brings an extra level of peace and comfort that allows us to enjoy our trip that little more.
Before booking, click into the vehicle details and read exactly what is covered. Look specifically for mentions of gravel, sand and ash, and wind related damage. If it is not listed, assume it is not included.
For most trips, paying a bit extra for the right insurance is far better than risking a problem in Icelandic conditions.
The cost of your camper rental in Iceland will depend on several factors. This includes the size of the vehicle, the duration of your trip, and the company you decide to go with. When it comes to hiring a campervan in Iceland, generally you’ll pay between $76-$150 per day for a smaller campervan, whilst renting a large motorhome will set you back between $200-$400 per day.
Most rentals cover bed and bedding, kitchen setup (stove, sink, fridge or cooler), running water tanks, heating, and utensils. Add-ons often include things like sat‑nav, Wi‑Fi hotspots, & camp chairs.
Basic policies include collision damage waiver (CDW) and 24/7 roadside assistance. Add-ons like Gravel, Sand & Ash, and Premium insurance are optional—check each provider carefully.
Typically must be 20+ years old with at least 12 months of driving history. Premium models (like 4×4 campers) may require 23 or 25+. Non-EEA licences must be in Latin script; an IDP may be needed.
Pet policies vary by company—some allow small dogs with a cleaning fee, others don’t. Book early and declare your pet to avoid surprises.
Many campervan rentals includes 24/7 mechanical assistance, either standard or upgraded. But you need to check carefully with your chosen provider when booking.
Only required if you plan to drive on F‑roads in the Highlands. Otherwise, 2WD models handle main roads fine. For winter (Nov–Mar), 4×4 is strongly recommended. We certainly needed it in March when there.
Summer (Jun–Aug): Warmest, long daylight, all campsites open.Shoulder seasons (May, Sep–Oct): Cheaper, fewer crowds, autumn colours & Northern Lights.Winter (Nov–Mar): Most affordable, ideal for Aurora hunting, but many sites close and roads may be impassable.
Most rentals offer unlimited mileage, though some restrict kilometres. Fuel isn’t included—expect higher prices in remote areas for fueling up.
Drive on the right.Speed limits: 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on main roads.Watch for hidden speed cameras and wind warnings.
For couples: a mini or compact van is efficient and easy to park. For families or gear: look at 4‑berth or larger models, considering storage and space.
If you’re just planning to drive the iconic Golden Circle route then this can technically be done in a day - however, we’d recommend taking your time to fully enjoy the sites. If you want to drive your camper along the full ring road in Iceland, then you’ll want to allow at least two weeks.
Since 2015, Iceland has brought in a series of new camping rules. This is to reduce the impact of tourism on the fragile environment, as the country attracts up to 2 million visitors a year. If you’re planning to explore Iceland by campervan, you’re legally required to stay at campsites overnight. You can no longer wild camp anywhere whilst driving around the county.
Typically, you have to be at least 21 years of age to rent a campervan in Iceland. Some companies will allow you to hire a camper at 20 years of age, but it all depends on who you choose! This often comes with certain requirements like having had your driving licence for at least a year.
The Golden Circle is the most iconic road trip route in Iceland and is 300 km (186 miles) long. This route is also known as the Golden Triangle, as it takes you to three of the most popular attractions in the country - the Geysir Geothermal Area, Gullfoss Waterfall, and Thingvellir National Park.
For many travellers, yes. Renting a campervan often works out more flexible and sometimes cheaper than combining a car rental with hotels, especially in peak season. It also lets you travel at your own pace, avoid nightly hotel check-ins, and stay closer to nature. The biggest benefit is freedom rather than cost savings, but for longer trips the value adds up quickly.
Most campervans in Iceland do have heating, but not all of them. Fully equipped campervans and motorhomes almost always include a built-in heater, while basic sleeper vans sometimes rely only on insulation or bedding. If you are travelling outside peak summer, it is worth double-checking that heating is included in the vehicle details.
Yes, if you choose the right vehicle. Campervans with proper heating and insulation are warm enough for Icelandic nights, even in shoulder season. Very basic vans without heating can feel cold once temperatures drop, which is why most travellers are happier choosing at least a mid-range campervan.
In Iceland, overnight stays in campervans are mainly limited to official campsites. Wild camping in campervans is not generally allowed unless you have explicit landowner permission. Campsites are easy to find, well signposted, and usually offer toilets, showers, and waste disposal.
Yes. You do not need prior campervan or motorhome experience to rent in Iceland. The vehicles are straightforward to drive, and rental companies provide a handover explaining how everything works. As long as you are comfortable driving on normal roads, most travellers manage without any issues.
You will typically need:
An international driving permit is not usually required if your licence uses the Latin alphabet, but it is always worth checking the rental terms before booking.
Now you’ve taken a look at the best campervan rentals in Iceland, it’s time for the fun part!
Whether you want to go whale watching, explore Iceland’s many waterfalls, or head out on a few hikes - there are endless things to do in this beautiful country.
Of course, your itinerary will differ depending on whether you’re just road-tripping the Golden Circle (like we did) or the full ring road but this country has many awesome places to visit.
