best campervan rentals Scotland

Wow, when you Google, "what are the best campervan rentals in Scotland?", all you get now is "ad, ad and another ad".

Well to help you navigate through the choice, we've created this guide.

Hands down, the BEST way to discover Scotland is by hiring a campervan

After more than 6 months spent personally road-tripping the country, we fell in love.

We also realised just how MANY campervan motorhome rental firms there are in Scotland.

So I wanted to take some time to do a deep rundown of all the best ones.

To help you decide which one to choose when planning your own trip.

So here’s a look at the 10 best campervan and motorhome rentals in Scotland.

Note: Some posts may contain affiliate links. Read more in our Privacy Policy. Learn more about how we create and update content in our Publishing Guidelines.

Why trust us? Why are we experts?

Brad and I have rented campervans for many years, long before we ended up converting our own!

Our in-depth rental experience, trying out all different kinds of vehicles gave us a real feel for what different types of vans offer. As well as how different companies specialise.

Some companies target their line to younger couples looking for a cheap and cheerful getaway. While others tailor to family's and older couples who prefer the mod-cons and space that a motorhome allows for.

So we decided to combine our knowledge of renting vans, and owning them; along with our 6 months experience campervanning all across Scotland, to create this guide.

And help make it simple and easy to find your perfect vehicle.

I just want you to know that we have a lot of personal experience on this subject!

We truly know what we’re talking about and we are trying to make the process of renting a campervan in Scotland a lot easier for yourself.

p.s. As always, if you have any questions you don't think we answer in this guide, just leave a comment in the section at the end and we will help where we can.

Why should I even rent a campervan in Scotland?

you can camp right next to epic Scottish spots like this

I know sometimes when you look at campervan rental prices, it can seem quite expensive.

However, accommodation in the UK has gone up and up over the years, so renting a camper/motorhome will allow you to not only save on accommodation fees, but most of the time you'll have access to your own cooking equipment. So you can save A LOT on eating out costs.

Plus a lot of the time, you can choose campervans and motorhomes that come complete with toilet and onboard shower; so you won't even need to pay for campsites. (Just one every few days for a waste disposal site to empty waste and top up water).

Not only that, if you have dietary requirements, or allergies, or just generally prefer cooking your own meals, a campervan is also a great option.

AND again, if you have pets: hotels and even Airbnbs, don't always allow them. Or oftentimes they charge extra. With your camper you can take your loved pet with you and not have to be worried they won't be accepted!

Our dogo Phoebe, well, she loves van life, so she can vouch it's great fun for dogs too!

Quick answer: what to book for Scotland

If you want the short, practical answer, focus on the van setup first, not the rental company. And

the best company to use to do exactly this is Motorhome Republic (more details on them below).

For Scotland, most travellers will have the best experience in a campervan that has:

  • Good heating
  • Enough indoor space to sit comfortably on rainy days
  • A proper cooking setup
  • Sensible insulation for cooler nights

We’ve spent more time vanlifing in Scotland than any other country. And one thing we can say is that Scotland’s weather is unpredictable … even in summer.

Rain, wind, and cooler evenings are common, especially in the Highlands and on the west coast. A very basic sleeper van can work for short summer trips, but most people underestimate how much time they’ll spend inside the vehicle.

Comfort matters more here than saving a bit of money on the daily rate.

Plus, wild camping in Scotland is legal. So a well set up and equipped van just gives you that bit more flexibility in where you can stay and (even though sometimes more expensive) can then save you money on campsite fees.

An example of what works well in Scotland

When you search with these features selected, you’ll often see compact campervans with heating and proper kitchen setups appearing from established UK and European operators.

As shown in the example screenshot above (prices shown are from the time of searching and will change), you’ll typically see:

  • Campervans with built-in heating
  • Practical interiors designed for wet weather
  • Reasonable mileage allowances for long routes
  • Vehicles suited for Highlands and coastal driving

The easiest way to find the right vans (without guessing)

Rather than trying to memorise company names, the fastest way to find the right campervan is to run a search with your dates and group size here on Motorhome Republic, then let the filters do the work.

Once you’re on the results page:

  1. Open Filters
  2. Tick:
    1. Automatic transmission (if you prefer relaxed long drives)
    2. Toilet
    3. Shower
  3. Then see which vans appear for your dates that are larger and well set up a proper adventure around Scotland.

You can add and remove other filters depending on what is important to you. But that’s why we like Motorhome Republic so much (more below) as it is suited to all budgets.

From there, you can:

  • Compare layouts side by side
  • Balance comfort versus price
  • See what’s actually available, not just advertised

This avoids the common mistake of choosing a company first, only to find the right vehicle type is already booked.

How are these campervan rental companies ranked?

To ensure we’re giving our readers the best options and the most up-to-date information, we’ve come up with our own ranking system.

By looking at Google reviews (+ rating), Trustpilot scores, and Motorhome Republic Ratings, we bring together the best RV companies for each destination (in this case, we compared dozens of different RV companies that operate in Scotland).

We also ranked these companies based on:

  • Our own experience renting around the world
  • Vehicle quality and age
  • Suitability for Scottish weather and road conditions
  • Availability during peak summer months
  • Transparent pricing and mileage policies
  • Consistent user feedback across platforms

Companies with limited fleets, outdated vehicles, or consistently poor feedback were excluded from the top rankings.

How to book your chosen rental

Where possible, I've included links below to Motorhome Republic.

This is essentially a price comparison site for motorhome and campervan rental firms all around the world.

They feature the biggest array of motorhome and campervan rental firms in Scotland and are a great place to find the best deals and availability for your chosen dates.

In Scotland's busy summer season, rental firms tend to sell out well in advance. A quick search on Motorhome Republic will show what's actually available for you to book.

Other great reasons to book with Motorhome Republic:

  • Support team - They have a support team on hand 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Helping you with any issues at any stage of your booking.
  • Vehicle Guarantee - If, for whatever reason, your rental firm lets you down prior to collection, the team step in to find you a comparable vehicle at no added cost.
  • A trusted brand - They've so far processed more than 3 million days worth of rentals, and are the leading motorhome comparison firm in the UK.
  • Lowest prices - They guarantee the lowest possible price for your rental, and even offer a price match guarantee.

The company specialises in compact and mid-sized campervans, making it a great choice for those who want something easy to drive on Scotland’s narrow roads, especially in places like the Highlands or Isle of Skye.

One of the biggest advantages of Roadsurfer is its all-in-one rental package. Most bookings include unlimited mileage, insurance, kitchen equipment, and camping essentials, which makes planning your trip much simpler and avoids unexpected extra costs.

Roadsurfer also offers a straightforward booking process and flexible rental options, including one-way trips across different locations in Europe. This can be especially useful if you’re planning a longer trip beyond Scotland.

These campervans are equipped with essentials such as sleeping areas, basic kitchen setups, and storage space, allowing you to travel comfortably without needing additional accommodation.

Because Roadsurfer specialises in smaller vehicles, they’re particularly well suited for navigating Scotland’s winding roads, remote areas, and smaller villages where larger motorhomes can feel restrictive.

If you’re after a large motorhome with lots of space, you may want to consider other providers. But for flexibility, ease of driving, and modern design, Roadsurfer is one of the best options available.

2. Motorhome Escapes - Best luxury motorhome rental in Scotland for premium road trips

  • Pick up/drop off location/s - Edinburgh

Unlike many rental companies that focus on budget or compact campervans, Motorhome Escapes specialises in larger, luxury motorhomes. These are ideal for travellers who want more space, better onboard facilities, and a more hotel-like experience while on the road.

One of the standout features of Motorhome Escapes is the level of finish in their vehicles. Their motorhomes are modern, well-maintained, and come equipped with everything you need for a comfortable trip, including full kitchens, spacious sleeping areas, and onboard bathrooms.

The company also provides a more personalised rental experience, with helpful guidance at pick-up and clear instructions for first-time motorhome users. This makes them a great option if you’re new to travelling by motorhome but still want a premium setup.

Overall, Motorhome Escapes is one of the best choices in Scotland if you’re looking for a high-end motorhome rental with strong comfort, space, and reliability.

Vehicles on offer:

Motorhome Escapes offers a range of larger motorhomes designed for comfort and practicality on longer road trips.

Most of their vehicles sleep between 2 and 6 people, making them suitable for couples, families, and small groups. These motorhomes typically include fixed beds, fully equipped kitchens, dining areas, and bathroom facilities with a shower and toilet.

Because of their size and layout, these vehicles are best suited for travellers who prioritise comfort over manoeuvrability. While they may be less suited to very narrow roads or tight parking spots, they provide a far more spacious and comfortable experience compared to smaller campervans.

If you’re planning a longer road trip around Scotland and want something more premium, Motorhome Escapes is a strong option.

4. Apollo – Best international motorhome rental brand in Scotland

  • Pick up/drop off location/s - Edinburgh
  • Price range - $$–$$$
  • Best suited for - Travellers looking for a globally recognised rental brand
  • Availability - Check here

Overview:

Apollo is a well-known international motorhome rental company with operations across Europe, Australia, and North America. This makes it a familiar choice for travellers who prefer booking with a large, established brand when planning a road trip in Scotland.

One of the main advantages of Apollo is its global presence, which often brings more standardised processes, a wide selection of vehicles, and the option to book across multiple countries. This can be particularly useful if you’re planning a longer European road trip rather than staying within Scotland.

Apollo offers a range of motorhomes designed for comfort and practicality, with most rentals including key essentials such as kitchen equipment, sleeping areas, and basic living facilities. However, inclusions can vary depending on the booking, so it’s worth checking what’s included in your specific rental package.

While Apollo provides a solid and reliable option, customer experiences can be mixed compared to some smaller, locally focused providers. For that reason, it’s best suited to travellers who value brand familiarity and flexibility over a more personalised rental experience.

Overall, Apollo is a strong choice if you’re looking for a recognised international brand with a wide vehicle range and flexible booking options.

Vehicles on offer:

Apollo offers a variety of motorhomes suitable for different types of travellers, ranging from compact models to larger vehicles designed for families and groups.

Most of their motorhomes sleep between 2 and 6 people, and typically include features such as fixed beds, kitchen facilities, dining areas, and onboard bathrooms in larger models.

These vehicles are designed for longer road trips and provide a comfortable living space while travelling around Scotland. However, due to their size, they may be less suited to very narrow roads or tight rural areas.

If you’re after a trusted global brand with a broad range of motorhomes, Apollo is a solid option, especially for longer or multi-country trips.

5. Go Explore Scotland – Best locally focused campervan rental in Scotland for Highlands routes

Because the company operates within Scotland, it offers a more tailored experience compared to larger international brands. This includes helpful local knowledge, practical advice on routes, and a better understanding of driving conditions in more remote areas.

One of the key advantages of Go Explore Scotland is its focus on simplicity and ease of travel. Their campervans are designed to be practical and comfortable, making them well suited for navigating Scotland’s winding roads, rural areas, and smaller villages.

The company provides a straightforward rental process and aims to offer good value, particularly for travellers who want a reliable campervan without the higher costs often associated with premium motorhome providers.

Anywhere Campers has a fleet of approximately 50 fully-equipped motorhomes, including both automatic and manual transmissions.

This company offers several different motorhome models, which sleep 4 to 6 people. Each vehicle has plenty of space, making them a great choice for small groups and families.

The campervan will likely be a better option for exploring the Scottish Islands, as the roads can be very narrow, whereas there are plenty of main roads on the mainland.

One of the key benefits of renting with McRent is its comprehensive rental package. Most bookings include essentials such as unlimited mileage, insurance, kitchen equipment, and additional extras like an awning or bike rack, helping to simplify trip planning.

McRent also maintains a relatively modern fleet, with vehicles typically being only a few years old and professionally cleaned between rentals. This helps ensure a reliable and comfortable experience on the road.

Overall, McRent is a strong all-round option for travellers who prioritise space, comfort, and a well-established rental provider when exploring Scotland.

Vehicles on offer:

McRent offers a wide selection of motorhomes designed for comfort on longer journeys.

Their fleet includes vehicles that typically sleep between 2 and 6 people, making them suitable for couples, families, and small groups. These motorhomes often feature fixed beds, fully equipped kitchens, dining areas, and onboard bathrooms in larger models.

Because McRent focuses on larger vehicles, they are best suited for travellers who want a more spacious and comfortable setup. However, these motorhomes can be less practical on narrow roads or in more remote areas of Scotland.

If you’re planning a longer trip and want a reliable, well-equipped motorhome with plenty of space, McRent is one of the best all-round choices available.

Bunk Campers Scotland rental

And what sets them apart is the huge range of vehicles they offer. Right through from smaller 2 berth campers to larger 6-berth custom motorhomes.

They have been around since 2007 and own and maintain every single vehicle themselves.

They also update their fleet regularly, and none of their Scottish vehicles are more than 3 years old.

The depot is located just 10 minutes from Edinburgh airport. If you plan to fly into Glasgow then you can still hire, but you’ll need to travel for about 50 minutes to reach the depot.

Vehicles on offer:

Which, if you’re not used to driving large vehicles, is a massive bonus (trust me!).

Their smallest vehicle, The Roadie, sleeps 2 and is best for navigating small winding roads.

If you’re travelling as a couple but still want extra space, then you can opt for the Aero 2 which is a standard LWB vehicle; offering tons of living space inside, as well as space to shower and cook while standing up!

If your Scotland road trip forms part of a larger tour around Ireland and the UK, then these guys are probably your best bet.

When to book for best availability

Booking a campervan in Scotland is largely an availability game, especially in summer.

The most comfortable vans with heating and proper interiors book out quickly during school holidays and peak travel months.

When to book your campervan in Scotland

  • June to August – Book as early as possible. Leaving it late usually means fewer good options.
  • May and September – A great balance of price and availability, but still book early.
  • October to April – More availability, but weather-ready vans are still limited.

If you want the best balance of price and choice, aim to book at least 4–6 months in advance for summer travel.

Campervan rental prices in Scotland (by season + vehicle type)

Campervan rental prices in Scotland vary mainly by season and vehicle type. Rather than focusing on exact daily prices, it’s more useful to understand where each option sits from lower-cost to premium.

Very rough daily ranges:

  • Lower: GBP ~70–120 per day
  • Mid-range: GBP ~120–190 per day
  • Premium: GBP ~190–300+ per day

Summer prices (June to August)

  • Lower-cost: Small campervans for two people
  • Mid-range: Well-equipped campervans with heating
  • Premium: Larger vans or high-spec conversions & suitable for more people

Shoulder season prices (May and September)

Often the best value overall, with good availability and lower rates.

Off-season prices (October to April)

  • Lower headline prices
  • Fewer vans operating
  • Heating becomes essential

Insurance in Scotland explained quickly

Insurance in Scotland is generally straightforward, but it’s still important to check the details.

Key things to look for:

  • Excess amounts
  • Windscreen and tyre cover
  • Roadside assistance
  • Coverage on single-track and rural roads

Long distances, narrow roads, and unpredictable weather increase the risk of minor damage. Reducing excess where possible usually makes sense.

Many of Scotland’s best routes are quite narrow and winding and dinks in the wider motorhomes are very common (though not exactly encouraged!).

Always check what’s included in the vehicle details. If something isn’t listed, assume it’s not covered.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to rent a campervan in Scotland?

As a rough rule of thumb, expect to pay anywhere from £100-£150 per day for a larger 4 or 6-berth motorhome in Scotland. Smaller campers come in at between £60 and £100 per day, depending on which time of year you visit (they are more expensive in the summer). Prices vary depending on which size of camper you rent, for how long and at what time of year. Also, certain companies can be much cheaper than others.

Can you wild camp in Scotland in a campervan?

Yes, wild camping in Scotland is legal in tents and tolerated in campers. In fact, you will find wild camping spots located everywhere across the country. Just be sure to obey common-sense principles when wild camping, and respect other people’s property. There are many different schemes available nowadays that allow you to camp in parks, and other beautiful locations for just £5 a night!

Where can you go with a motorhome in Scotland?

It is possible to drive to most places in Scotland in a motorhome. Except for some mountain roads which are very narrow and can become dangerous with large motorhomes passing. Many of these roads are located in the northwestern part of the country along the NC500. If a road is too narrow to go down in a motorhome, you will likely see a sign telling you not to go down.

How old do you need to be to hire a motorhome in Scotland?

The typical age for renting a motorhome in Scotland is 25 and above. Many firms will rent to you if you are aged 21-24, but you may have to pay a young driver surcharge. You can get more details about this from your chosen rental provider.

Can you park a campervan anywhere in Scotland?

When in cities, it’s best to stick to larger car parks with bays big enough for your vehicle. When out in the countryside, try to stick to properly marked roads and only wild camp in locations that are suitable. Avoid places that you are likely to get stuck in if it rains heavily, or where you encroach on privately owned land.
