Best Campervan & Motorhome Rentals in Germany

Based on direct experience ...

The absolute BEST way to explore Germany is by renting a campervan.

Not only does it allow you to see the typical touristy spots; but it gives you the chance to stay in some truly spectacular areas.

It really is such a beautiful and diverse country, with vast areas of lush green forest and epic landscapes to camp amidst.

But with so many cities to fly into, and companies on offer, finding the best German campervan rental brand can be tough.

Well, I've used our hefty rental experience, to help make finding the perfect vehicle easy.

Lets get into it ...

Why trust us for renting a camper in Germany?

Every since 2019, Cazzy and I have been hooked on vanlife.

Starting out with our first rental for two weeks in Ireland, we soon upgraded to an off-grid 4x4 camper for 3 months in Germany and northern Europe.

Before eventually even buying and converting our own camper!

We know what goes into a good campervan, and what the major players in the business truly have to offer.

Our aim with the guide below is to combine our in-depth knowledge of renting campers and also living in them, to showcase which brands really step up to the mark and offer a great experience.

And also have the credentials to offer good support if and when things go wrong.

Quick answer: what to book for Germany

If you want the short, practical answer, focus on the vehicle setup first, not the rental company.

Germany is one of the best countries in Europe for motorhome travel. Roads are excellent, campsites are common, and infrastructure is built for larger vehicles.

For most travellers in Germany, the best experience comes from a campervan or motorhome that has:

  • Comfortable sleeping space
  • Indoor cooking facilities
  • A toilet (especially useful on long drives)
  • Heating for cooler nights
  • Plenty of storage space

Germany is also a great destination for larger motorhomes, especially if you plan to visit multiple regions or spend longer periods on the road.

Distances between destinations can be significant, so comfort matters more than saving a small amount on the daily rental cost.

A quick example of what works well in Germany

When you run a search on Motorhome Republic with your travel dates (more on these guys below), you’ll typically see:

  • Compact campervans built on VW Transporter bases
  • Larger Fiat Ducato campervans
  • Class B and Class C motorhomes
  • Vehicles with indoor bathrooms and showers

Germany has one of the largest motorhome rental markets in Europe, so vehicle availability is usually excellent. And it’s rare in that it has so many depots all across the country.

When renting a campervan in somewhere like Iceland or Scotland, you typically have one or 2 bases. With Germany you have far greater flexibility.

For couples, a compact campervan works well.

For families or longer trips, a 4–6 berth motorhome often provides much more comfort.

The easiest way to find the right vans (without guessing)

Rather than trying to memorise company names, the easiest way to find the right campervan in Germany is to run a search with your dates and group size on Motorhome Republic, then use the filters properly.

Once you're on the results page, look down the left-hand side where you can filter by things like:

  • Automatic vs manual transmission
  • Toilet
  • Shower
  • Heating

From there you can compare interior layouts side-by-side and see exactly what is available for your travel dates.

This approach avoids choosing a company first and only later discovering the right vehicle type is already sold out.

How to book your chosen rental

The best way to search for motorhome rentals in Germany is to use Motorhome Republic.

It’s a price comparison site that searches rental firms across the world to find you the best packages and cheapest deals.

They feature an array of campervan hire companies, and you can easily search for availability by inputting your chosen dates.

Here are some other great benefits of using Motorhome Republic and why we highly recommend using them:

  • 24/7 support team to help with any issues you may have.
  • A ‘price match’ guarantee for if you find your camper cheaper elsewhere.
  • No hidden charges or fees when booking.
  • A vehicle guarantee so you’re covered if your rental company lets you down!

I’ve included links to Motorhome Republic in this article where possible!

For more info, read our in-depth review of Motorhome Republic.

When to book your campervan in Germany

If travelling in:

  • June to August – Book early. Summer road trips across Germany and neighbouring countries are extremely popular.
  • April, May, September – Excellent shoulder season travel with fewer crowds.
  • October to March – Lower demand but colder weather. But, great for Christmas markets!

If you plan to travel during the summer holidays, booking 3–6 months in advance usually gives the best selection of vehicles.

How we ranked these rental firms

We ranked these companies based on:

  • Fleet quality and vehicle age
  • Our experience campervanning Germany
  • Suitability for German road trips
  • Pick-up locations near major airports
  • Transparent pricing and insurance policies
  • Consistent user feedback across Google and Trustpilot

Companies with unreliable fleets, unclear pricing, or consistently poor reviews were ranked lower.

Here's the final results, each one is discussed more deeply below ...
