But finding the perfect company can be complicated and expensive, so that's why I have rounded up the best motorhome and campervan rentals Germany currently offers.

Germany Campervan/Motorhome hire FAQ

How much does it cost to rent a campervan in Germany?

The cost of renting a motorhome in Germany will depend on the size of camper you choose, the duration of your hire, and the company you decide to go with.

Generally, you’re looking to pay between €60-€90 per day for a small campervan, and between €100- €140 per day for a large motorhome.

Of course, you can always choose to hire a car instead but then you'll need to pay extra for accommodation.

Is there free camping in Germany?

Unfortunately, free camping (or wild camping) is prohibited in Germany. If you decide to pitch up illegally you’re looking at a hefty fine.

If you choose to illegally park up for the night in a nature reserve, you’re looking at an even bigger fine, sometimes up to several hundred euros.

Do you need a special license to drive a motorhome in Germany?

To rent most types of motorhomes and campervans, only a standard license is required in Germany.

However, if you plan on hiring a vehicle that weighs over 3.5 tonnes, you’ll need a specialised license. So, it’s always best to check the weight of your chosen rental before booking it.

Can you park a campervan anywhere in Germany?

Although you can’t park anywhere with a campervan in Germany, there are plenty of official areas throughout the country.

These areas are called Stellplatz, and you’ll find around 3,600 of them in Germany. Many of them are free to use and offer facilities such as waste disposal, water, and electric hook up.

Is Germany motorhome friendly?

Germany is one of the most campervan-friendly countries in Europe with fantastic roads, beautiful scenery, and plenty of campsites.

The country’s autobahn system allows you quick and easy travel across the country. You can literally travel from the most northern point of Germany to the south in around 11 hours.

Are you ready to start exploring?

Now you’ve got your campervan rental sorted where should you head to?

Well first of all I’d recommend visiting all of Germany’s popular cities including Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt, and Cologne.

Then from there, the world (or Germany in this case) is your oyster.

The country has a variety of beautiful landscapes and regions to visit including the Bavarian Alps, Rhine Valley, the Black Forest, and Lake Kӧnigssee. You’ll also want to head to Neuschwanstein Castle!
