Since I've been wanting to learn Spanish, I thought I'd give this AI language learning app a go! Here is my experience so far, and I'll continue to update!
makes you fluent app review

For years I’ve been saying I want to learn Spanish. I know little bits, but if there was one other language I wish I knew more of, it’s Spanish. I love listening to people speak it, and I love singing in it, and I just love how it looks! Plus, quite a few different countries speak Spanish, so in my travels, it would be useful to know more!

When we travel so much, committing to an in-person Spanish class isn’t possible or convenient for me. So when I found this Language learning app, I thought, actually, this could be a really cool way to improve my Spanish skills, from my phone!

All I needed now was to commit to it!

Which is exactly what I’m going to do, and to make myself accountable to that, I’m going to update this post with exactly how well I’m doing via the app!

BUT, if you’re thinking of an app to help you learn a new language, you may feel overwhelmed with the amount of choice available nowadays. To help with that, I'm going to give you a review of the Makes You Fluent App, based on my own experience!

So let’s get to it!

TAP TO INTERACT

What exactly is MakesYouFluent?

Let’s start with a pretty simple overview. The MakesYouFluent App is a new solution powered by AI for those looking to improve their language skills quickly and efficiently.

How does the app work?

So picture the MakesYouFluent App as that super-helpful local you meet on the first day of a trip: they size up your (pretty terrible) grammar, ask what you actually want to chat about, then whisk you straight into real-world conversation.

First things first, when you enter the app, you hop into a quick placement quiz, which sets your starting level and unlocks a bespoke learning route.

From there it’s all about talking—tap a scenario (ordering tapas, or wine (priorities people), asking for directions ect), hit the mic and your AI tutor will come back in real time, nudging your pronunciation, grammar and vocab as you go.

The Hands-Free mode lets you keep the chat rolling while you cook or commute, and the app’s 24/7 availability means your “classroom” is wherever you’ve got signal.

It’s essentially a pocket-sized language immersion trip, minus the long-haul flight and at a price that’s roughly a single in-person lesson for a whole month of unlimited practice.

Pretty cool, eh?

Starting up- My experience

When you first enter the app, you’ll be asked what language you want to learn, what level of language speaking you're currently at, and then you get to pick an AI tutor.

This is certainly weird to me, as I've never worked with a AI person before, but I use AI in my general life all the time, we all do, so if I can use it to help speak Spanish better and quicker, then I’m up for trying!

1, 2 and 3

Anyway, you don’t actually need to use the AI tutor if you don’t want to, it’s a way to talk with one and practice your Spanish back and forth, at a time that suits you. Which is super convenient.

You’ll be given a personalized learning plan.

Mines looks like this:

And when you go to each section, it’s broken down like this:

  • Nouns
  • Verbs
  • Adverbs
  • Adjectives
  • Missing Word
  • Complete Sentence
  • And, Role Play Chat

So you pretty much go through everything and end with a bit of practice!

My in-app experience

What I really like about the app is that it’s sort of laid out with targets and goals.

This makes the whole process seem easier, and more manageable, because let’s face it, when you start out trying to learn a new language, it can definitely look and feel overwhelming!

I also like that there are different “medals” you can earn when you learn a certain amount of new words. Again, these little goals help make it fun and motivating to learn a new language.

Goals like this...

The AI features are very advanced. You’ve got so many options.

For example, you can talk with your AI tutor, or do a practice call, or even a pronunciation evaluation, which is very useful

All you do is repeat what you hear and you’ll get instant feedback!

There’s also the option of AI conversation, whereby you can opt for a free-form chat, which is exactly what it says on the tin, a chat to explore any topic, OR, you can do a roleplay chat, where you can test your conversations skills in a realistic setting, OR, and this is the fun one, you can chat with famous people.

Yup, I know what you’re thinking…what do you mean woman lol

Well it just adds another layer of fun language learning, by having fun conversations with characters from history or stories, which in turn improve your speaking and listening skills.

Some of the “celebs” on offer include Steve Jobs, Albert Einstein, Julius Caesar, Al Capone and many more! This is more of a feature when you’re at a more intermediate stage of your language learning….I'm a beginner, so I’ll let you know how this goes when I get to it! Lol

Lastly, there are even other fun exercises included within the app to really help shape your language learning skills.

For example, the ability to describe an image, engage in a debate, or even guess a word game, where you can challenge AI in a popular charades game.

ALL these features bring about unique ways to practice all the words you’ve learned, so you have a far higher chance of remembering them by using them in a variety of ways.

Gone are the days of simply repeating words and phrases back to yourself until you’ve memorised them!

You will actually be able to practice using words and phrases in a whole host of different situations, so you’re constantly using your brain and challenging yourself to learn a new language.

So that’s my overall experience so far, but let’s quickly go over some of the pros and cons of the MakesYouFluent App.

Key Features of the App:

  • Personalised AI tutors – the app assigns an AI teacher that adapts every dialogue to the exact topic you pick, so lessons never feel generic

  • Interactive learning – you practise by role-playing everyday situations and having real-life style conversations instead of drilling flashcards in isolation

  • Level-adaptive pathway – an initial assessment lets the AI pitch lessons at just-right difficulty and keep advancing them as you improve.
  • 24/7 flexibility – because everything is AI-driven you can open the app and study whenever you like, morning or midnight

  • Cost-saver – a single month of unlimited use costs roughly the same as one private lesson.

  • Real-life voice conversations with the AI give you speaking-practice in a safe, no-pressure space.

  • Pronunciation coach – instant feedback helps you fine-tune how you sound.
  • Multiple languages in one account – start with the “most popular” tongues now and switch as new languages roll out.
  • Topic picker – chat about anything from small-talk weather to a job-interview rehearsal; you choose the scenario each time

  • Immediate, line-by-line feedback on grammar, vocabulary and style, plus tips on how to fix mistakes.
  • Built-in quick translations you can tap while speaking or reading to keep the conversation flowing

  • “Listen & Learn” text-to-speech turns every prompt or correction into audio for extra listening practice.
  • Hands-free mode – switch it on and do the speaking exercises without touching the screen (useful for the Role-play, Debate, “Chat with Famous People”, etc.).

  • Variety of exercise types – vocabulary drills, sentence building, voice debates, word-guessing games, image descriptions and more keep practice fresh

Pros and Cons of the Makes You Fluent App

Pros

  • Adaptive AI coaching – I really like that every lesson is driven by an AI tutor that adjusts both the topic and the difficulty level to match your current skills, so you’re rarely stuck with material that is too easy or impossible to follow. For someone who can get frustrated easily, this makes learning a lot more appealing and easier.

  • Real-life, voice-first practice – you spend most of your time in spoken dialogues and role-plays (ordering food, debating, describing images, etc.), which gives you the kind of muscle-memory traditional flash-card apps skip.

  • Hands-free mode & 24/7 access – you can carry on a conversation while commuting or cooking, and there’s no need to book fixed lesson times. I LOVE this. You are not restricted, you can fit learning into your lifestyle, not the other way around.

  • Competitive pricing – the developer positions the monthly plan as roughly “19 × cheaper than a private tutor”, making long-term practice affordable. I can’t 100% vouch for how much an in-person tutor is, as I’ve not done it! But the pricing seems reasonable to me!

Cons

  • Language catalogue is still small –There are only a select number of languages on the app right now (10 that I could see!), but, a lot of the most popular languages are there, but I’m sure they will increase as time goes on.
  • Subscription-only, no clear free tier – you reach a paywall after the initial quiz and plans auto-renew; there is no mention of a time-limited free trial.

  • Reliability complaints – recent Google Play reviews cite frequent crashes, I’ve so far used the app for a few hours, and it hasn’t crashed on me! I’ve tested all the features and they all appear to me working for me so far.

  • Limited social element – the FAQ itself notes that interaction is “online and largely solo”; there are no group classes, live tutors or community leader-boards.This may be a con for some people! But, personally I prefer it. I think it will be down to personality.

So there we have it, my review of the Makes You Fluent App, SO FAR! ;)

My initial thoughts and usage are positive, and I’m excited to continue learning more Spanish on the app over the coming weeks and months.

Cazzy
