Exploring the United Kingdom by your own vehicle is hands down the BEST way to see the country.
Public transport in the UK isn’t cheap and can be unreliable, which is why I’d recommend hiring a camper or motorhome!
You could opt to rent a car in London, but you will still need to pay for expensive hotels on your trip.
That's why I'd say go for a motorhome and then your accommodation is sorted.
London is often the cheapest way to enter the United Kingdom as there are several airports around the capital.

But the real adventure begins once you get out and start exploring the rural countryside and wonderful coastal towns.
Below I will give a rundown of the best companies for hiring your camper.
As well as a few top tips on getting the best deal possible on your motorhome or campervan rental.

There are 7 vehicles to choose from, and each one comes with cooking facilities, a toilet, shower, and heating.
The vans range from 2 to 6 berths and are often fitted with sat-navs and reversing cameras.
Spaceship Rentals is a trusted brand in the UK and prides itself on its ‘no hidden costs’ policy. This means you know exactly what you’re spending!
We used them as our Irish camper rental of choice and had a fantastic experience!
They offer a range of comprehensive insurance options, 24/7 roadside assistance, and unlimited mileage - which you’ll definitely want.
During your trip, you’ll also get a temporary access code to the Caravan and Motorhome Club!
Spaceship Rentals offer 3 different campervans ranging from 2 to 7 berths.
Each vehicle is compact, easy to drive, and fuel-efficient meaning you won’t be wasting tonnes of cash on fuel.
No matter which vehicle you choose, they will all come with cooking & kitchen facilities, storage areas, a fridge/freezer, and a built-in awning.
The large motorhomes will also come with a cooling and heating unit. This means you can travel during the winter if you’d like, as this is when rentals are at their cheapest!
If you’re looking for cheap campervan hire in the UK, Apollo is one of the best choices.
It’s known for being one of the most affordable rental firms in the country, and if you’re lucky you might be able to snatch up a campervan for less than £100 per day.
Trust me - not many companies will match that!
This company also has an app called ‘Apollo Connect’ making it easy to connect with local vehicle support teams, and roadside assistance.
Apollo has 5 rentals available to hire, and they range from 2 to 6 berths.
Each vehicle comes with a toilet, shower, cooking facilities, and onboard heating.
However, if you’re looking to rent a small camper in London this may not be the company for you as all their vehicles are relatively big.
That does mean plenty of storage space though, and lots of room to relax and move around.
Just Go’s depot is a fair way out of London city centre, but is situated close to Luton airport.
They have one of the largest fleets of motorhomes in the UK, and each year this fleet is replaced!
With competitive prices, a variety of vehicles, and on the road support - Just Go is a great choice if you’re looking to rent a large motorhome in London.
However, they do automatically add a charge of £5.00 per night to each hire, to support the UK government's low emission tax. You’ll need to consider this when thinking about your budget.
Just Go has 10 different motorhomes available to hire, and they range from 2 to 6 berths.
Each rental comes with a variety of amenities including a hook-up, a TV, and an oven.
Your motorhome will also be equipped with Bluetooth, GPS, and reversing cameras which are very helpful when it comes to driving a large vehicle!
McRent is one of the most trusted campervan hire companies in the UK, and has a lot to offer for campers.
Each rental includes WC chemicals, comprehensive coverage, 24/7 roadside assistance, and 24/7 camper care.
Some of the vehicles even come with unlimited mileage which is perfect if you’re looking to do a big road trip around the United Kingdom.
Not only that, but McRent has drop-off locations up and down the country so you wouldn’t have to drive the van back to London!
They also have drop-off locations across Europe if you’re looking to extend your trip even further.
McRent has 10 different vehicles available to hire ranging from campervans to luxury motorhomes.
They also range from 2 to 6 berths, so there is something for everyone!

If you’re looking for unique rentals in London, then Quirky Campers is the company for you!
They aren’t their own hire firm, and instead, rent out private self-built motorhomes and campervans.
This gives you a HUGE variety of vehicles to choose from, and each one will have its own set-up!
Luckily you can narrow down your search on their websites by category to make things easier.
There is a specific section for ‘London campers’ and you can even filter your search by dog-friendly vans!
Quirky Campers offers such a large range of vehicles, and new ones are added each year.
This gives you plenty of choices when it comes to interior design, space, and the size of the vehicle.
You won’t have to worry about the reliability of vehicles either, as the company only lists campers that have been converted by approved converters!
As the name suggests, you’ll be getting a completely unique camper if you decide to rent with Quirky Campers!
Indie Campers is one of the most unique choices when it comes to hiring a campervan in London.
Not only do they hire out their own vehicles, but this company also rents out privately owned campervans too.
This gives you plenty of choices when it comes to space, amenities, and vehicles.
Indie Campers also have a very flexible cancellation policy, so you can cancel your trip for free up to 15 days before your hire starts.
As Indie Campers rent out private vehicles and their own, you’ll have plenty of choices!
However, you’ll need to check what comes with each rental.
Some of them come with insurance and mileage included, whilst others don’t!
You’ll also find that there is a big price variation between vehicles on their website, although Indie Campers do offer a discount for longer hire periods on their campers.
If you’re looking for VW campervan hire in London then CamperVanTastic is the place to go!
Although their included extras differ depending on the vehicles you choose, each rental does include fully comprehensive insurance, roadside assistance cover, and unlimited mileage.
You’ll also get to choose some board games, books, and DVDs from the depot to take along with you!
Not only that, but CamperVanTastic offer plenty of ‘optional extras’ including an EU upgrade, roof toppers, portapotties, and bike racks.
CamperVanTastic currently has four different VW campers available to hire.
These include two T6.1 models and two VW Grand California campers.
Each vehicle offers plenty of space and a portable camping stove for you to cook with!
Although the amenities differ between vans, generally your rental will come with a dining table and chairs, a hook-up cable, and plenty of kitchen utensils.
The London Campers depot is just a 40-minute drive outside of the city centre, so it’s in a convenient location for renting a campervan in London.
They offer both modern and retro VW campers, and cater for both short-term, long-term, and European trips!
The standard hire package at London Campers includes breakdown cover, fully comprehensive insurance, and unlimited mileage.
This rental company also offers a ‘price match guarantee’ so they will match cheaper quotes found elsewhere!
London Campers has five modern VW campers, and two retro vans available to hire.
It’s up to you which vehicle you choose, but it’s important to note that retro VW campers are often much slower than the T5 series!
No matter which vehicle you choose, each rental comes with gas for cooking, a fold-up camping table and chairs, and a BBQ.
However, some vehicles may have added amenities so it’s always best to check the details before you book.
Yescapa is Europe’s largest motorhome rental marketplace and is home to a wide selection of vehicles.
If you’re looking to rent a cheap camper in England, then Yescapa is your best bet.
Depending on the dates, you might be able to snap up a converted van for as little as £50 per day!
I know, super cheap - and this isn’t a price many other rental companies can match!
Some of the campervans on Yescapa also have a ‘long hire discount’ where you can cut your costs further if you’re planning a long road trip.
Yescapa has a HUGE selection of vehicles available, so you’ll definitely find one to your liking!
Whether you’re looking for a large motorhome or a small van, the choices are endless.
Popular options include large motorhomes, VW vans, and small converted campers.
The only thing is you’ll have to check what comes included with each specific rental as it varies per vehicle.
The cost of motorhome hire in London all depends on the size of your vehicle, the duration of your trip, and the company you decide to go with. The time of year also plays a big part!
On average you’re looking to pay between £50-£100 per day for a smaller campervan, and £120-£180 for a large motorhome.
Technically it’s not illegal to sleep in your campervan at one of the car parks (unless they state so), but the police or council have full authority to move you along.
Instead of risking it, I'd recommend heading to Crystal Palace Caravan Club Site which is the most centrally located motorhome park in the city.
Generally, if you’re looking to hire a campervan in London most companies will require you to be at least 25 years of age.
Some rental companies will allow you to hire a camper if you’re 21 but only if you meet other requirements, and you’ll likely be subject to a young driver surcharge.
Unfortunately, you can’t!
Many parts of the UK including the majority of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland don’t allow wild camping, as it’s illegal.
However, if you head up to Scotland it’s legal and there are plenty of great wild camping spots in this beautiful part of the United Kingdom.
Most parts of the UK are accessible to campers and motorhomes as large motorways connect the north and south of the country.
However, you will find plenty of narrow lanes and mountain roads throughout the United Kingdom that won’t be suitable for large vehicles. Often there will be signs to tell you, but otherwise, you’ll have to use your judgement!
Now you’ve chosen your perfect rental, it's time to explore.
After you’ve visited all the popular sights in the capital like Buckingham Palace and Big Ben - it’s time to move on to the rest of the UK.
From London, you can travel around England and Wales, and even head up to Scotland which I definitely recommend!
There are plenty of incredible places to visit in Scotland and several awesome road trip options. This includes the North Coast 500, the Southwest Coastal 300, and no road trip would be complete without visiting the Isle of Skye!
